Lifestyle Medicine Research Links

Lifestyle medicine is an approach to healthcare and preventive medicine that focuses on lifestyle factors and their impact on health and well-being. It recognizes that many chronic diseases and health conditions are primarily caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices and habits, and seeks to address these root causes through lifestyle interventions.

The field of lifestyle medicine encompasses a range of areas, including nutrition, Circadian Rhythm/Entrainment, physical activity, Positive Psychology/Social Connections, sleep, and substances abuse such as tobacco and excessive alcohol. The goal is to promote healthy behaviors and empower individuals to make positive changes in their lives that can prevent and even reverse certain chronic conditions.

Lifestyle medicine takes a holistic approach, considering the interconnectedness of various lifestyle factors and their influence on overall health. It combines elements of preventive medicine, behavioral science, and clinical care to help individuals adopt healthier habits and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and mental health disorders.

RIPHAH Institute of Lifestyle Medicine – RILSM

On 4th October 2019 a MoU was signed between RIPHAH University and Lifestyle Medicine Training Centre in Islamabad. Dr. Shagufta Feroz is the Director of RIPHAH Institute of Lifestyle Medicine- RILSM. Lifestyle Medicine is the only preventive and therapeutic care movement adopted by WHO and active in about 48 countries. This critical healthcare movement is motivated by research indicating that modifiable behaviors — especially physical inactivity and unhealthy eating — are major drivers of death, disease, and healthcare costs. While the medical profession is generally aware of this, there has yet to be a systematic and comprehensive effort to incorporate lifestyle medicine into standard patients, conduct research to demonstrate efficacy of lifestyle interventions, and to create a model for national adoption of Lifestyle Medicine.

Vision of RIPHAH Institute of Lifestyle Medicine
