Building a Happier , Healthier and Peaceful World
In a world increasingly defined by uncertainty, conflict, and disconnection, humanity stands at a crossroads. The challenges of our time—rising mental distress, chronic disease, social fragmentation, and global unrest—have revealed a profound truth: health without happiness is incomplete, and progress without human well-being is unsustainable. The Happiness Movement, initiated in 2021 by Dr. Shagufta Feroz, was born during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most challenging periods in modern human history. As the world grappled with fear, isolation, grief, and uncertainty, it became evident that humanity was facing not only a viral pandemic but also a pandemic of anxiety, loneliness, and loss of meaning.Amid lockdowns, disrupted lives, and overwhelmed healthcare systems, a deeper question emerged: How can humanity remain emotionally resilient and hopeful during times of crisis?
The Happiness Movement arose as a response to this question. Rooted in the philosophy of Whole Person Health, the movement calls for a return to the fundamental principles that allow human beings to flourish—balance, connection, compassion, and alignment with the natural rhythms of life. At its core lies a simple yet transformative premise: happiness is not a luxury reserved for times of comfort; it is an essential human capacity that sustains resilience during times of crisis. In moments of uncertainty, happiness becomes a source of strength, hope, and healing. The Happiness Movement seeks to restore what modern life has gradually eroded—the capacity for joy, purpose, belonging, and harmony between body, mind, and soul. It recognizes that the healing of humanity cannot occur solely through policies, technologies, or medicines, but through the cultivation of inner well-being and collective compassion.
The Second Pillar is the Daily Practice of Happiness, which is taught academically at the undergraduate level, for postgraduate healthcare professionals, and through short courses for community awareness. The movement encourages individuals and communities to cultivate happiness through simple, evidence-based lifestyle practices that nurture the whole person—healthy nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, meaningful relationships, gratitude, compassion, and connection with nature. These practices, grounded in the science of Lifestyle Medicine, empower individuals to reclaim their health and rediscover the joy of living even in the midst of adversity. When nurtured intentionally, happiness becomes a powerful force capable of strengthening individuals, healing communities, and fostering peace in the wider world.
